John Hovan fought against fascist forces during the Spanish Civil War, then fought in WW II. After returning to Rhode Island, he was questioned in front of Congress as a part of McCarthy-era red-scare hysteria. Abstract:
The documents in this collection where created by or relate to neo-fascist organizations in Spain just prior to and after the death of Generalissimo Francisco Franco. The organizations include: Accion Social Corporativa Española (ASCE), Alianza Nacional, Frente Nacional, Fuerza Nueva, Fuerza Nacional del Trabajo, Falangistas Espanolas de las JONS, Union Nacional and many others. It is comprised of approximately 175+ photographs, most color, 55 in large format (17.5 x 23.5 cm), the rest approximately 10 x 15 cm, some with captions on the verso identifying places and dates; 150+ documents includes serials, pamphlets, small flyers, broadsides, posters, correspondence, and 20 pieces of foreigh ephemera (France, Italy, Germany, United Kingdom, United States of America).
